The Zuidlaardermeer

Where reed, water and wide skies meet on the border of Groningen and Drenthe.

A lake with character

The Zuidlaardermeer is one of the largest lowland lakes in the northern Netherlands. It was born in the last Ice Age and today forms a peaceful nature reserve where walkers, anglers, sailors and birdwatchers all find their place.

Around the lake you'll find wet meadows, reed beds and low shores that put on a show all year long. In spring rare marsh birds nest in the reeds, in summer sailing boats cut through the open water, and in autumn thousands of geese land here for their winter stay.

Nature

What to do

Frequently asked questions

Is visiting the Zuidlaardermeer free?

Yes. The lake and its surrounding nature areas are freely accessible. Parking at the main car parks (Meerzicht, De Groeve, Kropswolde) is also free.

Can you swim in the Zuidlaardermeer?

Swimming is permitted at your own risk — there is no officially supervised beach. Informal swimming mostly happens on the east side by Meerzicht and in the south by Kropswolde. In hot summers, check zwemwater.nl for blue-green algae beforehand.

Are dogs allowed?

Yes, on a leash on the walking paths. In the Natura 2000 core zone (central reed beds, goose resting areas) dogs are not permitted during the breeding season.

Can I get there by public transport?

Yes. Haren station is a 7-minute train ride from Groningen. From there take bus Q3 towards Zuidlaren (Meerzicht stop). Taking bikes on the train is free outside rush hour.

What's the best time for bird-watching?

Early morning — half an hour after sunrise — for songbirds and marsh birds. For geese, November through February is peak. Visit a bird hide (Pieterpol or Wilgenpol) for the best views.
