On the water
- 🛥 Sailing & windsurfing — the lake is known for its steady south-westerly winds.
- 🛶 Canoeing & sup — from the shore and through the side channels.
- 🎣 Fishing — perch, pike, bream and eel are plentiful. A Dutch fishing permit is required.
- 🏊 Swimming — on the informal beaches at the south and east sides, weather permitting.
Along the water
- 🚶 Walking routes — from 3 to 15 km, through farms, villages and reed lands.
- 🚴 Cycling — the lake loop is ~28 km, mostly car-free.
- 🌿 Birdwatching — hotspots Pieterpol and Wilgenpol, early morning and dusk.
- 🍺 Terraces — in Zuidlaren, Noordlaren and Kropswolde.
Getting here
Parking is available at several points around the lake. By public transport: train to Haren, then the bus to Zuidlaren.
Tip: check weather and water levels first
The lake is shallow and strong winds can kick up a significant swell. Check the forecast before heading out.
